Local Access and Transport Area | LATA
Local Access and Transport Areas (LATA) define the geographical boundaries between local telephone service networks, as designated by the federal government. These boundaries determine which phone companies are allowed to provide local and toll service for each area. As such, each LATA is typically drawn around “markets,” or cities and their surrounding areas, rather than by state or area code.
